Reunification Therapy
Rebuilding Parent-Child Relationships
Reunification therapy is a structured, child-focused therapeutic process designed to repair and strengthen a parent-child relationship following separation, disrupted contact, estrangement, or a pattern of resistance and refusal. These circumstances often arise during or after separation, divorce, custody conflict, or other significant family transitions.
Jennifer Culley, LCSW-R, provides a calm and neutral setting in which parents and children can better understand the difficulties affecting their relationship, improve communication, address relational injuries, and gradually develop safer and healthier patterns of connection.
Treatment is trauma-informed, developmentally appropriate, and responsive to the child’s emotional needs. At the same time, the process maintains clear adult responsibility for treatment participation and recognizes that children should not be placed in the position of deciding whether a parental relationship will continue.
Depending on the family’s needs, reunification therapy may include:
Individual meetings with each parent
Individual meetings with the child
Parent-child sessions
Parenting support and education
Identification of barriers affecting the relationship
Development of healthier communication and interaction patterns
Gradual, clinically appropriate increases in parent-child contact
Coordination with attorneys, Attorneys for the Child, and other involved professionals when properly authorized
The goal is not to force affection or overlook legitimate concerns. The goal is to reduce distress, improve emotional safety, address the factors contributing to the disrupted relationship, and create opportunities for trust and connection to be rebuilt over time.
Court-Involved Cases
Reunification therapy may be initiated through a court order, attorney referral, or parental agreement. Before treatment begins, the therapist reviews relevant court orders, treatment expectations, consent requirements, current contact arrangements, and any identified safety concerns.
Reunification therapy is a clinical treatment service rather than a custody evaluation. The therapist does not determine custody, make ultimate legal decisions, or serve as an advocate for either parent. When authorized or required, clinical updates may be provided regarding attendance, participation, treatment progress, barriers to treatment, and recommendations related to the therapeutic process.
Getting Started
Parents, attorneys, Attorneys for the Child, and other involved professionals may contact the practice to discuss whether reunification therapy is appropriate for a particular family. Relevant court orders and background information may be requested before services are scheduled.
